Muscovite–Novgorodian War (1477–1478)
Ivan III’s last campaign against Novgorod ended in the city’s capitulation: the Novgorod Republic was abolished and its vast lands were incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Moscow.

The army set out from Moscow on 9 October 1477 and reached Novgorod at the end of November, but did not storm it; a pontoon bridge was built across the Volkhov under the direction of Aristotele Fioravanti. The divided and starving city opened negotiations, and Ivan III demanded the abolition of the veche (the city assembly) and of the office of posadnik (mayor). On 13 January 1478 the Novgorodians acknowledged his authority, on 15 January Muscovite troops entered the city, and the veche bell was taken away to Moscow.
