Construction of the Kremlin’s Dormition Cathedral
The Bolognese architect Aristotele Fioravanti built the new Dormition Cathedral in the Kremlin, the principal church of the Russian state, combining the model of the cathedral in Vladimir with Italian engineering.

The previous building by the Moscow masters Krivtsov and Myshkin collapsed in 1474, and Ivan III invited a master from Italy. Fioravanti drove oak piles into the foundations and, for the first time in Russia, used vaults one brick thick and iron tie rods; the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir served as his model. The cathedral was consecrated in August 1479; Russian monarchs were later crowned there.
