Siege of Kyiv
Batu’s combined army besieged and stormed Kyiv, which was defended by Dmytro, the commander appointed by Daniel of Galicia; the ancient capital of Rus’ was laid waste.

The Mongols approached the city on 5 September 1240. The chronicles differ on the date of its fall — 19 November according to the Pskov Chronicle, 6 December according to the Laurentian Chronicle — so the end of the siege is given as a range. The wounded Dmytro was taken prisoner and spared for his courage; archaeologists have found mass graves of the city’s inhabitants near the Church of the Tithes. The fall of Kyiv is traditionally regarded as the end of Kievan Rus’.
