Battle on the Ice
Novgorodians and men of Vladimir led by Alexander Nevsky defeated the knights of the Livonian Order and the army of the Bishop of Dorpat on the ice of Lake Peipus.

In 1240–1241 German and Danish knights seized Izborsk, Pskov and the lands of the Votians on the Gulf of Finland. Called back by the Novgorodians, Alexander destroyed the knights’ fortress of Koporye in 1241, freed Pskov in March 1242 and then met the Order’s army on the ice of the lake. The victory halted the Order’s advance on the Novgorodian lands: under the peace treaty the knights renounced their conquests. The exact site of the battle is still debated, so it is marked approximately.
