Banu Hilal
Arab Bedouin tribal confederation from Najd, kin to the Banu Sulaym. Some of its clans moved into Egypt, Iraq and Syria; in the 970s they sided with the Qarmatians and were confined by the Fatimids to Upper Egypt, and in the mid-11th century the Fatimids sent them against the Zirids of Ifriqiya. Their settlement in the Maghreb was a major factor in its Arabization, and their migration is the subject of the epic Sirat Bani Hilal.
