Dharmapala
Second king of the Pala dynasty of Bengal (reigned c. 770/783 – 810/821), the son of Gopala. He fought the Pratiharas and the Rashtrakutas for Kannauj, where he installed his protégé Chakrayudha; his Khalimpur copper plate boasts that the kings of the north approved the new king of Kanyakubja. A great patron of Buddhism, he is named by seals from Paharpur as the founder of the Somapura monastery, and Tibetan tradition credits him with Vikramashila.
