Hasan-i Sabbah

Persian Ismaili missionary and founder of the Nizari Ismaili state, born at Qom into a Twelver Shi'ite family. Converted to Ismailism at Rayy, he studied in Fatimid Cairo from 1078, seized the fortress of Alamut in 1090 and led the Persian Ismailis in open revolt against the Seljuks. After 1094 he recognised Nizar as imam and broke with Cairo; he directed the movement from Alamut until his death in 1124, revered by his followers as Sayyidna, 'our master'.
