Person1055–1092
Malik-Shah I
Seljuk sultan (1072–1092), son of Alp Arslan, under whom the sultanate reached the height of its power; the government was largely in the hands of his vizier Nizam al-Mulk. In 1079 he adopted the solar Jalali calendar, drawn up by a committee of astronomers that included Omar Khayyam at the observatory of his capital, Isfahan. He died a few weeks after Nizam al-Mulk's murder, and his empire fell into wars of succession.
