Abu Ali al-Hasan al-Tusi, called Nizam al-Mulk, 'Order of the Realm', Persian vizier of the Seljuk sultans Alp Arslan and Malik-Shah and, after 1072, the real ruler of the empire for twenty years. A Shafi'i, he founded the network of madrasas named Nizamiyyas after him, and the Book of Government (Siyasatnama) is traditionally ascribed to him. He was stabbed to death near Nahavand in 1092, by the usual account by an Ismaili assassin.
