Nizari Ismaili state (Alamut)
State of the Nizari Ismailis founded by Hasan-i Sabbah after he seized Alamut in 1090: a network of mountain fortresses and towns in Iran — in Rudbar and Quhistan — and later in Syria, surrounded by hostile Seljuk territory. Its followers recognised Nizar and his descendants as imams; their enemies called them hashishiyya, the source of the European word 'assassins'. Its imam surrendered to the Mongols in 1256, and Alamut fell that December.
