Jawhar al-Siqilli
Jawhar ibn Abdallah, called al-Siqilli, ‘the Sicilian’, a slave-soldier of Greek origin from Sicily who became the foremost Fatimid general. He led al-Mu'izz's armies to the Atlantic (958–960), conquered Egypt in 969, founded Cairo and the al-Azhar Mosque and governed Egypt as viceroy until the caliph arrived in 973; he died in 992.
