Kutama
Berber tribe of the mountains of Lesser Kabylia, between Bougie and Constantine in present-day north-eastern Algeria. Converted to Isma'ili Shi'ism by Abu Abdallah al-Shi'i from 893, the Kutama overthrew the Aghlabids and brought the Fatimids to power in 909; they provided the bulk of the Fatimid armies until after the conquest of Egypt in 969 and were resented as an overbearing military elite.
