Qarmatians
Radical Isma'ili movement, whose name is usually derived from that of the missionary Hamdan Qarmat. In 899 it broke with the leaders of the Isma'ili mission at Salamiya, refusing to recognise the future Fatimid caliph as imam, and in Bahrayn, in eastern Arabia, Abu Sa'id al-Jannabi founded a Qarmatian state centred on the oasis of al-Ahsa. Its raids on Iraq and on the pilgrim caravans culminated in the sack of Mecca in 930; later the Qarmatians fought the Fatimids in Syria and Egypt, and their state declined in the 11th century.
