Yusuf ibn Tashfin
Almoravid ruler (c. 1061–1106) of the Lamtuna, a kinsman of Abu Bakr ibn Umar, who left him in charge of the north. He conquered most of present-day Morocco and western Algeria, took the title amir al-muslimin, 'Commander of the Muslims', recognising the Abbasid caliph, defeated Alfonso VI at Sagrajas in 1086 and in 1090–1094 annexed most of the taifa kingdoms of al-Andalus, ruling from Marrakesh.
