Europe and the Ottoman Empire: the end of the Middle Ages

More than 14,000 Hungarian soldiers, over a thousand nobles and seven bishops fell in the battle. The death of the childless Louis II opened a struggle for the Hungarian crown in which Ferdinand of Habsburg was one of the claimants, and in 1541 the Ottomans occupied Buda. Mohács began nearly two centuries of conflict between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburgs over Hungary. The date is given in the Julian calendar.
