When Richard charged in an attempt to kill his rival in person, the Stanleys’ troops, who had been holding back until then, entered the battle on Henry’s side, and the king was surrounded and killed. The Tudors presented Bosworth as the beginning of a new era, and in English tradition 1485 is often taken as the end of the Middle Ages. Henry VII’s marriage to Elizabeth of York reconciled the feuding houses. The date is given in the Julian calendar.
