The capture of the city crowned the Granada War of 1482–1492; the siege of Granada itself lasted eight months. The terms of surrender guaranteed the Muslims freedom of religion, but they were soon broken: in 1492 the Jews were made to choose between baptism and leaving the country, and by 1501 the Muslims of Granada too were required to convert. With the war over, in April 1492 the monarchs accepted Columbus’s project.
