Waldseemüller map
At Saint-Dié the cartographer Martin Waldseemüller published a wall map of the world on which the New World was called “America” for the first time, in honor of the navigator Amerigo Vespucci.

The map was printed from twelve woodblocks and accompanied by the treatise Cosmographiae Introductio (“Introduction to Cosmography”), which explained the choice of name. Of the thousand copies printed, only one is known; it was found in the early 20th century at Wolfegg Castle, and since 2003 it has been held by the US Library of Congress.
