Coronation of Ivan IV as tsar
The sixteen-year-old Grand Prince Ivan IV was crowned tsar, becoming the first Muscovite ruler to assume officially the title of Tsar of All Rus’.

The order of the ceremony in the Dormition Cathedral was drawn up by Metropolitan Macarius, who placed on Ivan a cross containing a relic of the True Cross, the barmy (a ceremonial collar) and the Cap of Monomakh. From then on the Muscovite state became the Tsardom of Russia. Two weeks after the coronation Ivan married Anastasia Romanovna.
