Quiriguá
Maya city on the lower Motagua River in eastern Guatemala, 48 km north of Copán, long a dependency of that kingdom. After its king Kʼakʼ Tiliw Chan Yopaat beheaded the king of Copán in 738, it controlled the valley’s trade in jade and obsidian and raised giant carved stelae and zoomorphs; its ruins have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
