Yang Guifei
Yang Yuhuan, first married to Emperor Xuanzong’s son Li Mao, then the emperor’s favourite consort, raised to the rank of guifei in 745; her second cousin Yang Guozhong rose through her favour to become chancellor. When An Lushan’s rebellion drove the court from Chang’an, the mutinous guards at Mawei killed Yang Guozhong and demanded her death, and on 15 July 756 she was put to death on the emperor’s order. Bai Juyi’s poem Song of Everlasting Regret made her story famous.
