Battle of Diu
The Portuguese fleet of Viceroy Francisco de Almeida destroyed the combined fleet of Mamluk Egypt, the Gujarat Sultanate and the Zamorin of Calicut off the Indian port of Diu.

The Mamluks, who were losing revenue from the transit trade in spices, fitted out a fleet against the Portuguese with the support of Venice. The victory of ships armed with powerful artillery gave Portugal command of the western Indian Ocean. To avenge the death of his son, Almeida had the prisoners executed. The young Ferdinand Magellan took part in the battle.
