Vasco Núñez de Balboa’s party crossed the Isthmus of Panama, and Europeans saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time; Balboa named it the South Sea.

Balboa set out from Santa María la Antigua del Darién on 1 September 1513 with 190 Spaniards and Indigenous guides. According to the most widely accepted account, on 25 September he saw the ocean from the top of a mountain ridge, and on 29 September he reached the Gulf of San Miguel, waded into the water and claimed the new sea and the adjoining lands for the Crown of Castile.
