Portuguese conquest of Hormuz

Afonso de Albuquerque subjugated the island kingdom of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf: his first attempt in 1507 collapsed, but in 1515 he returned, made the king a Portuguese vassal and built a fortress that gave Portugal control of the Gulf trade for more than a century.

Hormuz was one of the great entrepôts of the Indian Ocean, and King Manuel planned to seize the three gateways of Asian trade — Aden, Hormuz and Malacca. In September 1507, after taking or sacking the towns of the Omani coast, Albuquerque forced King Seyf ad-Din to pay tribute and allow a fort to be built. But his captains, unwilling to stay, deserted to India, and in February 1508 he had to withdraw.

Having taken Goa and Malacca, Albuquerque returned in March 1515 with 27 ships. On 1 April the young King Turan Shah allowed him to land; the all-powerful minister Rais Ahmed was killed in the king’s presence, and the fortress of Our Lady of the Conception was built at the northern tip of the island. Albuquerque, already ill, died within sight of Goa in December 1515. Hormuz remained a Portuguese client state until 1622, when it fell to an English and Persian force.
