Capture of Smolensk (1514)
After a third siege and a heavy artillery bombardment, the Lithuanian garrison of Smolensk surrendered to the forces of Vasily III; the city became part of the Russian state for almost a hundred years.

Two sieges in 1512–1513 had ended in failure. In the summer of 1514 an army that included gunners and engineers hired abroad bombarded the fortress, and the garrison capitulated; the sources date the surrender to 30 or 31 July and Vasily III’s ceremonial entry into the city to the following day. The Novodevichy Convent was founded in Moscow to commemorate the victory.
