Alexander Nevsky becomes Grand Prince of Vladimir
After a punitive expedition by the Horde commander Nevryuy against Prince Andrey Yaroslavich, the grand principality of Vladimir passed to Andrey’s elder brother, Alexander Nevsky.

Andrey, who had held the throne of Vladimir since the late 1240s, was defeated by “Nevryuy’s host” in May 1252 and fled to Sweden. Alexander, who was at the Horde at the time, returned with a yarlyk and ruled Vladimir until his death in 1263. Historians disagree over whether he had a hand in bringing about Nevryuy’s campaign.
