Battle of al-Mansurah
The crusader vanguard, led by the king’s brother Robert of Artois, burst into al-Mansurah and was wiped out by the Mamluks, whose commanders included Baibars; Louis IX’s advance on Cairo came to a halt.

On 8 February 1250 the crusaders crossed the Ashmum canal and captured the Egyptian camp, but were then trapped in the narrow streets of the town; Robert of Artois was killed. Fighting outside the town continued until 11 February: the crusaders held their positions but could not break through to Cairo. On 6 April, while retreating to Damietta, their army was finally defeated at Fariskur, and Louis IX was taken prisoner.
