Accession of Ivan III
On the death of his father, Grand Prince Vasily II the Blind, Ivan III became Grand Prince of Vladimir and Moscow without a struggle; over his 43-year reign he united most of the Russian lands around Moscow.

Ivan had already been his father’s co-ruler during his lifetime and under his will received the greater part of his domains. His reign brought the annexation of Novgorod and other lands, liberation from dependence on the Horde, the Sudebnik of 1497 and the rebuilding of the Moscow Kremlin.
