On learning of the death of the great khan Möngke, Hulagu withdrew his main forces to the east, leaving in Syria only the army of Kitbuqa, who was killed in this battle. The victory halted the Mongol advance toward Egypt and strengthened the young Mamluk Sultanate; seven weeks later Qutuz was murdered by conspirators, and Baibars became sultan.
