Kublai was proclaimed great khan in 1260 and defeated his brother Ariq Böke in a civil war. The edict of 1271 naming the state presented Mongol rule as the legitimate continuation of earlier Chinese dynasties. The capital became Dadu (Khanbaliq), built next to the ruins of Zhongdu; by 1279 the Yuan had completed the conquest of the Southern Song.
