The mutinous army of Emperor Charles V — Spaniards, German Landsknechts and Italian mercenaries — stormed and sacked Rome; Pope Clement VII took refuge in the Castel Sant’Angelo.

The unpaid soldiers forced their commander, Charles, Duke of Bourbon, to lead them on Rome; the duke himself was killed in the assault, and the Swiss Guard suffered heavy losses shielding the pope. Looting and violence went on for months, until in February 1528 plague and the approach of the forces of the League of Cognac made the army leave.
