Alexios I Komnenos
Byzantine emperor (1081–1118) who seized the throne in a revolt and began the Komnenian restoration. He fought off the Normans of Robert Guiscard and Bohemond (1081–1085), crushed the Pechenegs at Levounion (1091) with Cuman help, and his appeals to the West for aid against the Seljuks sparked the First Crusade.
