Godfrey of Bouillon
Lord of Bouillon and from 1087 duke of Lower Lorraine, formerly a supporter of Henry IV, who led the Lorrainers on the First Crusade. After the capture of Jerusalem he was chosen its ruler but took only the title of Advocate of the Holy Sepulchre; he defeated the Fatimids at Ascalon and died a year later, succeeded by his brother Baldwin as king.
