Troops from Novgorod and Pskov and the regiments of the princes of Vladimir met the forces of the Livonian Order, the Bishop of Dorpat and the Danish vassals near the fortress of Rakvere in Danish Estonia; both sides claimed victory.

The campaign was led by Prince Dmitry Alexandrovich, Nevsky’s son; Prince Daumantas (Dovmont) of Pskov distinguished himself. The Novgorod Chronicle describes the battle as a hard-won victory with heavy losses, while the Livonian Rhymed Chronicle presents it as a success for the knights. The date is 18 February 1268 in the Julian calendar.
