Napoleon spent his last years under the watch of a British garrison, dictating the recollections that formed the basis of the Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène. The theory that he was poisoned with arsenic, popular since the 1960s, has been rejected by most modern studies. In 1840 his remains were brought to Paris and laid to rest in Les Invalides.
